The industry as a whole is in part based upon the major search engines, such as Google and their Webmaster guidelines, which basically means one to three entities control the fate and destiny of an entire industry of professionals. It’s the American dream… scratch that’ the American reality; where one percent of the population control the wealth, assets and direction of the remaining ninety-nine.

In the context of SEO, one has to remember that the entire Internet industry must always keep the end user in mind. If it doesn’t make sense to the end-user then it will likely not last – and more or less be a trend’ that brings me to the craft and concept of SEO copywriting. My stance and standpoint as a copywriter (sans SEO), is to always have my client’s message in mind and to convey that message to the target audience, without making it come off overbearing, but rather simply establish a connection. And when you chuck SEO in the mix, we now have to consider keyword density and keyword phrasing. It’s a fine line I have to walk.

Do you write for the engines or the target audience? If you ask a Google Exec., they’ll tell you to write for the audience, but if you could communicate with the algo, then it would most likely say (in algo speak of course), “That if you don’t write with the variables of the algo in mind and don’t optimize properly then you’re losing out on an entire dearth of lateral keyword phrases and inflexions, which basically means you’re losing out on a shit load of potential traffic and thus the loss of sales and monetization.” Yes, algorithms curse and speak in run-on sentences.

I guess this (SEO protocol) all makes sense now, right up until the time Google makes a drastic algorithm update. At least I’ll know I’ll still be writing after that’ if that day ever comes. Whether it’s content or copy’ print or online, the bottom line is SEO is all the hype now, but will it be so critical a few years from now? I guess that’s the question that we’re all dying to know as SEO’s!

One thing I know for sure that’ll always be a mainstay is Pay-Per-Click advertising and Search Marketing. Hopefully devoid of click fraud! More on that later’

I’m not about to get into a sob story of some mid-sized company getting their marketing dollars drained and drilled due to fraudulent clicks on their pay-per-click ad campaign. If you want to read about that, click to read a story on click fraud featured in Wired.

What I would like to mention are the pathetic souls who sit and click on their fraudulent asses and could possibly contribute to the demise or better yet the restructuring of how entities conduct business on the Internet. The bottom-line is in the end, in some way shape or form the little guy’s going to pay for the fraud committed by a select few (other little guys mind you) who tried to cheat the system and get ahead. Akin to insurance fraud, the people who get screwed in the end are not necessarily the Insurance Companies (I can give a rat’s rear-end about a billion dollar entity getting screwed out of a little money), but rather the consumers who must pay for Insurance!

There are alternatives to advertising and promoting your web site on a shoe-string budget. Submitting press releases to various online media outlets are always great … free ads are another one … and oh heaven forbid using and advertising in another search engine from time to time to promote your website may also prove to be beneficial!

Just think … when Google first started, many people actually preferred HotBot over it! Sad, but yet pathetically true. Maybe HotBot’s demise was that the ‘T’ in Bot was a little too close to the ‘Y’ key and thus commonly and mistakenly entered as HotBoy.com’ and I won’t even dare link to that! With that in mind, the next step I review with the client is that the press release is in no way to be structured as a sales pitch. The intention and ideal goal of the release is to entice a journalist to’pick-up’ the story and contact us for an interview, which brings us to the second (SEO concerned) goal of the online press release: to get indexed within the search engines, news search engines, blog search engines and tag based engines. Basically, to get the name of the company, the web link and keywords associated with the company to be spread in as many places online as possible … in the hopes that it will drive targeted-traffic, and increase inbound links to the web site.

Google’s obviously been dominating the search engine marketplace for sometime, mainly due to having great results. But what happens when the search giant’s contextual advertising business begins to wane due to the ever-menacing monster at their door known as click fraud. PPC (pay-per-click) ads, otherwise known as contextual ads are their number one source of profit. So has the search giant known all along that click fraud could be their downfall? Is that why they’ve diversified their product base with all kinds of other tools and revenue streams – albeit really cool ones – such as froogle, Google maps, Google earth … the list goes on and on. How does MSN, Yahoo & EBay feel about that? Not too good. Toes are being stepped on. People’s livelihoods are being threatened.

I see some major acquisitions taking place in the next few years, by firms such as Yahoo, MSN & EBay – they’re already occurring. I also see mergers on the horizon … this is all coming from a crystal ball, I’ll have you know … but seriously, it doesn’t take a genius or an analyst to tell you: there are some major power plays going down and battle lines being drawn. At the end of the day, the winner will be the one who has the end-user in mind, not the advertisers … and my fear is the former is what brought Google to the forefront and made it a huge bang, but the latter is what made them rich … and as the clich’ goes: Money Changes Everything.

Well, one step of the SEO process, albeit the last and probably the seemingly easiest one, is to submit your URL and web site to the search engines; in the hopes that they’ll crawl and thus index your site. Ahh, sounds easy enough right? Just enter your URL and the little search bots will crawl your site … ooh that tickles … but feels kind of good, getting crawled by the GoogleBot, or MSNBot — not sure what Yahoo refers to theirs as. YahooBot sounds like something out of an Ali G skit.

Anyhow, so back to the matter at hand: submitting your site in the hopes it’ll get crawled. Well, I gotta surprise for you. Submitting often doesn’t help your site at all … generally speaking, unless it’s done in the proper outlet in the proper context. Example: you wouldn’t want to submit a site into Yahoo’s Mobile Search unless your site is Mobile Browser compatible and if you’re not sure if it is’ it’s likely not! To be continued …

My final thought, of the Talk Show Host variety on Search Engine Submissions is that more or less it’s likely to follow fate of the ubiquitous and now almost completely defunct act of meta-tagging, which was completely abused by keyword stuffing and other asinine acts. The only tag that’s still relevant and likely always will be is the title tag, which can be very useful to indexing your website so long as you employ it’s use appropriately … more on that next time.
